Fr JM Kariuki (Methodius) – Biographical Information
Fr JM Kariuki (Methodius) is the founder and Director of Saint Barnabas Orthodox Orphanage and Education Center, where he oversees the education and welfare of 314 children aged 3 to 16. A devoted servant of God and the community, his work reflects perseverance, faith, and a deep commitment to holistic development.
Early Life and Education
Born into a humble peasant family with 13 siblings, Fr JM Kariuki began his education at Malewa Primary and Ihiga Primary Schools before completing his secondary education at Malewa Secondary School in 2000. He pursued theological studies at Makarios Seminary, graduating in 2007, and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Maasai Mara University, specializing in Early to Middle Childhood Education. Currently, he is pursuing a masterโs degree in educational administration to enhance further his ability to lead and serve.
Clerical Ministry
In 2007, Fr JM Kariuki founded Saint Barnabas Orthodox Orphanage and Education Center to address the urgent needs of vulnerable children, providing them with care, education, and spiritual guidance. Since its establishment, the institution has supported over 1,509 children, connecting many to relevant institutions and ensuring their long-term success through consistent follow-up. He also provides mentorship and financial assistance to a large number of high school and college students, supporting their educational advancement and personal growth.
Ordained as a Deacon in July 2010 and as a Priest in November 2010, Fr JM Kariukiโs ministry has been marked by his commitment to community development through education, healthcare, and pastoral care. From 2012 to 2021, he served as the Secretary of the Naivasha Orthodox Bishopric, an administrative region under the Greek Orthodox Church, overseeing ecclesiastical and administrative responsibilities. In 2021, he was appointed as the Vicar of the Naivasha/Nyandarua Bishopric, providing spiritual leadership to the faithful in the region.
Leadership and Initiatives
Fr JM Kariuki has spearheaded numerous impactful initiatives, demonstrating visionary leadership:
– The Brotherhood of St Nectarios (2020): A monastic community fostering spiritual growth among young novices through mentorship, prayer, and disciplined spiritual guidance.
– St Nectarios Parish (2021): Established to meet the growing spiritual needs of the South Kinangop community, this parish serves as a center for worship, spiritual growth, and community outreach.
– South Kinangop Orthodox Medical Clinic (2023): This healthcare project provides accessible and affordable medical care, focusing on maternal and child health, preventive care, and treatment for underserved rural populations.
– Holy Apostles Orthodox Theological Institute (2024): Established within Saint Barnabas Orthodox Orphanage and Education Center, the institute equips clergy and lay leaders with theological education, strengthening the Orthodox Church in Kenya.
– South Kinangop Community Library Project (2014): A transformative project promoting education and literacy, the library hosts over 60,000 books for learners at all educational levels, supporting students and educators alike.
From 2018 to 2023, Fr JM Kariuki served with Orthodox Africa, a US-based non-profit organization, as Chairman of the Kenyan Orthodox Africa Board and as a Kenyan representative to the Orthodox Africa American Board of Directors. His contributions during this tenure significantly advanced mission projects and outreach programs across Kenya.
Authorship
In 2009, Fr JM Kariuki wrote and published a book on the life and works of Fr Eleftherios Muiruri Ndwaru. This book honors one of the pioneers of the Orthodox Church in Kenya, inspiring future generations by documenting his exemplary dedication and contributions to the faith.
Family and Vision
Fr JM Kariuki is married to Papadia Everlyne Mwangi, and together they are blessed with four children: Blessings, Panteli, Daniel, and Christine.
He envisions a future where the Eastern Orthodox Church in Kenya flourishes as a self-sustaining institution, strengthened by mission-driven leadership, community support, and spiritual growth.
